On the 30th of October I was privleged enough to see Slipknot at the Robinson Pavillion amongst 4,000 other crazy West Australian maggots. If you have ever been to a small gig, you would know: The Smaller, The Better! Machine Head opened with a brutal set including classics like Davidian and Old as well as fantastic new songs like Asthetics of Hate and Halo.
After Machine Head had finished some music came on the PA and everyone went to get a beer. AC/DC's classic For Those About To Rock came on the PA as a tribute to good old aussie rock until it was interupted by the familiar bass line from the title track of Iowa. As drummer Joey Jordison and his scarecrow gloves did a small bird dance the other eight members silently walked on stage before the unforgetable opening riff to classic Surfacing came out of guitarist Mick Thomson's amp. The crowd were up for it and so were the band. The marching snare drum bridge of The Blister Exists was fantastic to watch and singer Corey Taylor made everyone jump during a fantastic performances of Liberate and Before I Forget. Clown bashing a beer keg was amusing to watch during Duality. Disasterpiece and The Heretic Anthem got everyone singing and really opened the mosh pit and were a highlights of the night. Slipknot only played two songs off the new album which were Dead Memories and Psychosocial. The dark song Prosthetics became a headbanging frenzy and watching the maggots struggling to sing a long to the speed-rap verses of Spit It Out was nothing less than an amusing sight. Only One was a nice lead up to the encore that was to follow. As 4,000 maggots chanted SLIPKNOT, SLIPKNOT! The band came back on stage to the haunting (515) the band went into People=S**t and the big chorus got everyone singing along. (sic) was a brutal finish to this amazing concert. Corey Taylor was by far the most outstanding member.
