Corey Taylor

Background and Facts

Real Name: Corey Taylor
Nicknamed "The Sickness"

Corey Taylor, born December 8, 1973, is the lead singer of nu metal band Slipknot and vocalist and occasional guitarist of the band Stone Sour, the latter being formed prior to the commercial success of Slipknot.

Corey is the master of the horrid vocals and lyrics in Slipknot. Before he joined the band, he worked in a porn shop to earn money (it was called "Adult Emporium"). On stage he is loud, fast, and out of control. Offstage, he seems very calm and down to Earth. Before Slipknot he was part of the band Stone Sour. Corey loves Comedy albums, which he grew up on.
Battles With Alcoholism
Known as "the guy that was always ready to go out and do shots", Taylor's drinking became more and more problematic as time went by. Eventually it reached a point where Taylor would begin to drink as soon as he got up in the morning and generally would not stop until blacking out. According to Taylor, the problem began to eat away at his family life as he became more and more apathetic to the people and things surrounding him. Taylor finally made several attempts at suicide . All this culminated to the night of November 14 , 2003 . On this night, Taylor was about to jump off of the eighth story balcony of the Hyatt on Sunset Boulevard but his wife, Scarlett, managed to talk him down. After this incident Scarlett told him either he had to sober up and start being a father and husband or she was leaving with their kids.

Taylor chose to quit drinking and go sober rather then lose his family. The next year would prove to be "the worst year of his life" as Taylor struggled to redefine himself as a person and give up his partying persona and repair the damage that he had done to his body. He spent the year in self-imposed isolation, claiming that he "pushed his wife away for a while and was a really selfish, cold dick". In the process, the struggle would fuel some of his songs with Stone Sour, such as "Socio" and "Zzyzx Rd". Finally, Taylor would come to grips with his sobriety and began to use it as a source of inspiration.
Death Scare
In September of 2004, fans of Taylor were alarmed by quickly circulating rumors that he had died. The rumors were started by a website that had declared Taylor's death on the Friday of September 10, 2004. Further fanning the flames of the speculation into the matter, radio personality Mancow Muller discussed the subject of Taylor's death on his show on the following Tuesday, September 14.

According to Scarlett, the rumors first attributed Taylor's death to a drug overdose, then later to a fatal car crash. The whole incident happened to coincide with a birthday for Taylor's son on the following Friday (September 17). The sudden and unexpected influx of people going into the Taylor household for Taylor's son's birthday party only caused even higher heights of concern, causing even Taylor's manager to call them and confirm that Taylor was alright. Finally Taylor decide to put the issue to rest, walking out onto his front patio and yelling to the crowd "I am not dead." Laughing, his father-in-law backed him up, "Rumors of his death have been greatly exaggerated".
Meeting His Father
Taylor grew up not knowing his father. His father left prior to his birth and, at the request of Taylor's mother, remained absent from Taylor's life. It would not be until many years later that the two of them would finally meet. Scarlett took it upon herself to confront Taylor's mother about the issue, demanding that she reveal to Scarlett whatever she could about Taylor's father. When Taylor's mother finally agreed, Scarlett hired a private detective to find Taylor's father.

When the two of them finally met, the reunion turned out very well, starting off with the two of them having reportedly "cried for about 20 minutes". Taylor was overjoyed by the reunion saying that "a whole new chapter in [his] life has opened".

  • Corey is also in a cover band called Dum Fux, genres include punk, metal, 70s rock, 80s synth, "whatever the band feels like doing."
Stone Sour

Corey was also in Bloodfest and Dead Second. After Corey leaving Stone Sour for Slipknot the band ultimately finished. Jim Root also played in this band. Corey + Joel wrote most of the Stone Sour songs. They were like "Faith No More/AIC/Tool with a lot of other little elements thrown in."

Line-up:
Corey Taylor
James Root
Josh Rand
Shawn Economaki
Roy Mayorga
But in 2002, Stone Sour once again were back in action when Josh Rand approached Corey with new material he had been working on. Corey and Jim went on to take a break from Slipknot. Since then, Stone Sour has gone on to release two albums, Self Titled and Come What(ever) May and were both very successful records.

Spider-Man:
Corey appeared on the Spider-Man soundtrack with the track, 'Bother'. It shows his true singing ability and has silenced many critics.

He was quoted as saying to Rock Sound Magazine from the UK: I've been trying to get on this soundtrack for a year! Anyone who knows me knows I am the biggest Spiderman freak of all time! I started putting the word out and said I'd do a song with someone else just to be on that soundtrack, that's how much it meant to me! I've been waiting since 1993 for this movie to come out and I had this song called 'Bother', which is me and an acoustic guitar."
Last year I was like, 'Fuck it, I'll record it'. If nothing else it'd be just for me to have on record. So I recorded this song, sent it to my manager, he heard it and was like, 'Holy shit' and he took it to the girl who was putting the soundtrack together. She flipped, and so automatically I'm flying to LA to record this song and it was weird! It was the first time I've ever been in the studio doing anything by myself and on a professional level. It came out really good. This is a song I wrote seven years ago so I'm pretty happy with it!"

Other Shit

Mask
Corey Taylor's first mask, which was originally made from a crash test dummy-style halloween mask, is equipped with brown and blonde dreadlocks made from his real hair. It is said that his new mask is now inspired by Texas Chainsaw Massacre 's Leatherface
RUMOURS: He has been known to dress as a priest onstage. Corey is apparently a fan of "Mike Patton" who has been in Faith No more, Fantamos and Mr Bungle. According to Shawn Corey has an 18 inch neck. Corey prefers the nickname "FAITH".
Quote - "We aren't hiding behind these masks, we're actually revealing more to you than you might think. The mask I wear brings out all the shit inside me that I hate. Plus it hurts like hell, which helps my intensity." "If you feel like talking, you talk, if you don't, you don't" So many people are like, 'Gimmick, gimmick, gimmick!', Fuck you! You don't know what we're about! Our motto has always been, 'Music First.' Even if the masks and the coveralls weren't there, the music would still be good."

Mask - Used to be a leather face cover, with brown/blonde dreads. Yes, some of the dreads were made of his real hair. He used to wear them through the mask, but he cut them off because it was a pain to pull them through. Also, he was always changing his hairstyle. Now, his mask is made out of moulded latex instead of leather. Most of the dreads now seem to be fake. MEANING: "Twenty-seven, What does that mean? You'll figure it out" "Complete pain, it represents everything I fucking rally against, there is so much hate, blood, spit and puke in that fucking mask just from playing, I put it on every night and I remember why I am playing. I go from me now to the person I was when I wrote the songs."

Corey and his several types of "singing/shouting":
1) When he's actually singing (wait and bleed, mid point of no life)
2) Crazy screaming (beginning of sic and Eyeless), (surfacing fuck it all part)
3) Slow talking (I can't see, I can't be.., purity)
4) Fast talking (spit it out, no life)
5) Melodic (prosthetics, scissors)
6) Raspy scream (tattered and torn)
7) Normal scream. Like in only one, diluted, etc.

Young: At a young age Corey liked to get down to the likes of "The King" - Elvis, thanks to influences from his grandmother. "Elvis was a great singer". His grandmother also helped him with buying equipment and his talent for music.
A ghost? During Corey's youth he and some friends often talked about a burnt out old house that they dared not go near. Then one night they all decided to make their way towards the house; to their surprise it was all lit up and after hearing noises they ran screaming.

Q&A

What was high school like?
"I got kicked out, basically, my junior year i started a riot in the lunch room, because of the atrocious food. They kindly asked me to leave and i threw a chair at the vice principal."
When did you start out with music?
"The first live gig i ever did was actually with Stone Sour. This was in '92. I was 19 years old and i was so nervous man. We would do originals and covers and we would play three one-hour sets a night. We would do that four or five fucking days a week. It kind of taught you a work ethic, you know?"
How did you feel when you were offered the Slipknot gig?"I was at the very first Slipknot show. And then the next day, Slipknot and Stone Sour actually played together, which was crazy, you know? But i can always remember thinking to myself, 'I want to sing for this band!'. And then, two years later, they came to me and asked me. Slipknot wanted the best people in the scene and at the time i was the best singer in Des Moines, Iowa. I was like "this if fucking huge". Cos at the time it was still very experimental and very eclectic, and i loved that. It wasn't until we got signed that it became very narrow, and just all about the heavy all the time. And it really kinda choked alot od the love out of it for me".
Can you pin-point where you crossed the line, when things started getting dark?"For me it really hit a wall recording the Vol 3 album. There were other things going on in m life that were making me abysmal, basically, as a person. I always had a bottle of Jack next to my dresser. I was the guy at last call that would order four drinks so i could drink right up until i went out the door. I'd wake up in different places, not knowing how i got there. It was just really getting bad. My whole appearance was fucked, you know? I was swollen. When i would sweat i smelled like whiskey"
It came to a head on November 14, 2003, when you tried to jump of a hotel balcony?"I was very close to jumping off. My buddy, Tommy, actually grabbed me before i could jump. I woke up very, very confused. It was just the worst i had ever felt. The last real memory i had that night was leaning against the Viper Room, throwing up on the spot where River Phoenix died. And spitting it at people. I was the guy who you did not want to fucking hang out with when he got wasted. It needed to be time for me to quit drinking for a while. And when i did, it felt really good. It cleared so much shit out of me"
A news story surfaced a few years ago that announced you had died?"Yeah, that happened like 8 times! Jesus Christ! The last time was so serious, this fucking syndicated DJ goes on the radio in Chicago and starts telling people that i'm dead! My friends are calling him up going "He's not fucking dead!" My grandmother hears this, starts crying uncontrollably, so now i've got to call up my whole fucking family and let them know! its got so bad that at my sons birthday party, the local newspaper showed up thinking that they were having a wake for my funeral! And im there cutting the cake! So i ran out on the lawn shouting, "I Am Not Fucking Dead!"
